Independent Learning in Cultural Studies: the experience of the Roehampton seminar programme

Abstract: Cultural Studies was launched two years ago at Roehampton. From the outset, it has provided a spine of cultural studies seminars to support students throughout their degree. Unusually, these seminars are not formally attached to a lecture series or other more conventional methods of information delivery. Instead, they deploy a flexible and open learning format which offers space for students to think, contribute and make connections across all of the courses being taken during the semester. This case study assesses the strengths and shortcomings of this methodology and considers the wider lessons that can be learned from the Roehampton experience.

Author Information: Anita Biressi has been teaching cultural and media studies at undergraduate level for the past 10 years. She is a member of the ILT. She is also currently leading a collaborative project on teaching and learning with Middlesex University funded by the ADC LTSN (now ADM-HEA).
