Improving Employability within Media Professional Studies
Author information: Judith Jones is a lecturer in Media Professional Studies and Screen Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. She worked for Granada Television for over five years and has since combined her university career with freelance production work. She is the Liverpool John Moores representative on the GWAMP project, a HEFCE funded national project run in conjunction with Bournemouth University and the University of Gloucestershire that is examining the assessment of group work within media production
Abstract: The Media Professional Studies degree at Liverpool John Moores University is a distinctive industry-linked degree that uses production as a way of developing the support skills required by the independent producer. The emphasis of the course is vocational and work experience is valued as an integral component. In order to develop the students’ employability and allow them to reflect upon the transferable skills they have developed a third level module has been designed to enable them to help find employment in the media and related fields. The module combines lectures and seminars on areas such as skills assessment and networking with contributions from industry professionals Assessment takes the form of a mock interview for a job within a particular media company which each student selects from a choice of eight and presents a formal application. Detailed feedback is then given to each student on his or her performance
