Where and how do I start? Integrating sustainability and active learning in the Fashion and Textiles curriculum
Case study by Philip Hawkins, Visual Culture Coordinator in the
Division of Arts and Design at Somerset College of Art and Technology

SECTOR ANNOUNCEMENTS
UCAS are currently seeking specialists to work with on comparability studies
UCAS are developing the UCAS Tariff, including the management of the
process of bringing new qualifications into the UCAS Tariff and
reviewing qualifications already in the system. Any qualification
seeking entry into the Tariff is considered against an appropriate
benchmark qualification and, given the demands of conducting
comparability studies, it is recognised that such work requires
collaborative input and judgement from members of a panel of experts,
including subject specialists from higher education.
UCAS are currently seeking to widen the pool of HE subject-specialists
to call upon to work with UCAS on comparability studies; summary of
call for interest:
· Experienced HE specialists are needed for all subject areas to join a pool of experts
· All names sent to UCAS will be considered as expressions of interest at this stage and will not guarantee work.
· They will contact interested individuals as and when/ if their
subject specialism is required with a summary of timescales.
· If more than the required number of subject specialists
express interest, UCAS reserves the right to prioritise upon merit
based on their knowledge and previous experience
· UCAS will enter into formal contracts with subject specialists
for work on specific qualifications, for the period of the Tariff
“project”
· Subject specialists will need to undertake a set of tasks
relating to the incoming and benchmark qualification and outline their
findings to an Expert Panel
· It is anticipated that each Tariff “project” will require
approximately 3 days input (non-consecutive) – of which one day will be
at UCAS offices in Cheltenham
· Subject specialists will be recruited as a representative of
their employing university/college, which must offer a suitable range
of HE courses in appropriate subjects.
· A flat fee of £1,000 will be paid to the employing institution upon completion of the work
If you would like more information please contact:
Richard Spencer, Policy Officer, Policy and External Relations Unit, UCAS, tel: 01242 544862 or email: r.spencer@ucas.ac.uk

Design Council Multi-disciplinary Design Network project - visit to South Korea and China
We have been asked by the Design Council to share with you information
about the visit to South Korea and China they are planning for April
2010. The visit will be the part of their Multi-disciplinary Design
Network project, which the Design Council runs with support from NESTA
and HEFCE. The network was formed back in 2006 to support the
implementation of the Cox Review which recommended the establishment of
‘Centres of Excellence’ – universities offering postgraduate
multi-disciplinary programmes combining design, business, science and
engineering. To date HEFCE has made significant capital investments in
two new centres, Design-London and C4D based at Cranfield. There are
also other ‘Cox inspired’ initiatives underway at Kingston,
Northumbria, Nottingham, Lancaster, Southampton, Falmouth, Coventry and
Glasgow. The network’s aim is to support the group of HEIs to share
knowledge and best practice to improve programme design and assess the
impact of these new programmes. It also promotes the concept of
multi-disciplinarity to the wider HE community and government to
encourage the development of new courses and the removal of barriers to
collaboration.
To date the network members have done two trips to America (2006) and
Northern Europe (2007). Both reports can be accessed here:
http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/Design-Council/3/Publications/?PageNum=2 (they are in the middle of the page)
Key information about the Korea / China (Seoul and Beijing) visit:
· Dates: 10-18 April 2010
· Cost: £1,805 per person (estimated cost from December 2009 including flights and accommodation).
The Design Council has worked out the itinerary and are setting up all
the visits. They are aiming at the group of c. 15 participants and
there are still places available.
If you are interested or require any further information, including a draft itinerary, please contact Weronika Rochacka at weronika.rochacka@designcouncil.org.uk, 0207 420 5203 or Jesse Belgrave at jesse.belgrave@designcouncil.org.uk 0207 420 5279.

Beacons for Public Engagement Initiative - Online survey of UK higher education staff, and researchers
The Beacons for Public Engagement (BPE) initiative was launched by the
UK Higher Education Funding Councils, Research Councils UK and the
Wellcome Trust in January 2008.
The initiative aims to:
· Encourage a change in culture within Higher Education with regard to engaging with the public.
· Support the development of public engagement across all subject areas and activities.
This ongoing work is to be achieved through building on and refining
existing work, and through the development of new practice.
There are six Beacons for Public Engagement based around the following universities:
· Beacon North-East (Newcastle and Durham)
· CUE East (UEA)
· Edinburgh Beltane (Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh Napier,
UHI Millennium Institute, Edinburgh College of Art, Queen Margaret)
· Manchester (Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan, Salford)
· UCL (UCL and Birkbeck)
· Wales Beacon (Cardiff and Glamorgan)
There is also a National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) involving the universities of Bristol and UWE.
The Evaluation
Oakleigh Consulting Limited are evaluating the Beacons for Public Engagement (BPE) initiative on behalf of the funders.
An online survey was completed in 2008 forming part of our baseline
assessment for the evaluation. A similar survey is now available to
allow us to identify any changes in perceptions relating to public
engagement.
This survey is for all staff working in:
· UK higher education institutions.
· UK research institutes or centres.
They are interested in the views of staff within both BPE institutions
and those who are not in BPE institutions because we want to see what
is happening across the sector, so please complete the survey wherever
you work.
Completing the questionnaire
The questionnaire will be available online from Monday 15th February to Friday 2nd April 2010.
To access the online questionnaire, please use the following link: http://www.oakleighsurveys.co.uk/bpe2010/
If you have any queries regarding the completion of the e-survey, please contact Zeb Nash at Oakleigh zebnash@oakleigh.co.uk

Designing Inclusive Curriculum in Higher Education (DiCHE)
Inclusive Curriculum Design: an opportunity to share your good practice
The DiCHE project is funded by the Higher Education Academy and is
being undertaken by colleagues from Lancaster University’s Departments
of Applied Social Science and Educational Research.
The DiCHE project aims to gather from the sector and disseminate
information about, and provide examples of good practice of inclusive
curriculum design. There will be a dedicated section of the final
report for each subject centre.
They are seeking examples of inclusivity that take account of the six
key areas of equality legislation: gender, race, disability, age,
sexuality, and religion/faith as well as other social, cultural,
experiential and circumstantial factors that may lead to exclusion for
example students with caring responsibilities; working class students;
and international students, among others.
They would be especially interested in examples of inclusive practice
that go beyond the mere adaptation of materials or teaching methods,
and instead view it as something that permeates the curriculum. This
might include: syllabus content and reading lists that highlight
equality issues; assessment arrangements or teaching approaches that
ensure that all students’ needs are met, though do not single out a
group or certain individuals for special treatment.
If you have details of effective, inclusive curriculum design in your
subject area or have come across institutional or discipline based
barriers to inclusion please send brief details using the following
link http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/projects/reap/hea/dicheForm.php A member of the team will then contact you to discuss further.
Or for more information http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/projects/reap/hea/diche.html
