ADM-HEA ANNOUNCEMENTS
This is the first bulletin of the new academic year. We hope that you have had a good summer.

David Clews
Sadly, David Clews, our Co-Director and until very recently the Subject Centre Manager, passed away on Saturday, 13 August, aged 51. Many of you will have been aware that David had been seriously ill for some time but he continued to put his efforts into supporting the Subject Centre, contributing through his own projects and research despite deteriorating health.
He will be greatly missed by his colleagues at ADM-HEA and in the sector. We have received many kind messages of condolence, which have been passed on to his wife and family. David was an inspirational and tireless manager, a considerate and supportive colleague, and a creative, funny and charismatic person. In the words of our Subject Centre Director Stuart Laing “he was an exceptional colleague and a good man, he is a great loss.”

ADM-HEA Transition work
As you may know, we secured a bid for ‘transition funding’ from the Higher Education Academy which means that we can continue our work (be it on a reduced level of funding) until March 2012. The ADM-HEA Team now consists of Jenny Embleton, Debbie Flint and Stephen Mallinder with Stuart Laing continuing as our Director.
We will continue to send our weekly bulletin, support our funded learning and teaching projects and develop a number of events to explore pedagogic priorities in our subjects. We will also continue to collect and share your expertise and experiences of learning and teaching in art, design and media via Networks (issue 15 to be published in October).
ADM-HEA will be working with the HEA, in particular with the new Discipline Leads (see below), to ensure continuation of support for teaching and learning in our disciplines as the HEA moves to a new management structure and way of working.

New HEA Discipline Leads from 1 September 2011
Congratulations to Carolyn Bew (Discipline Lead for Art and Design) and John Mundy (Discipline Lead for Media and Communications).
Carolyn Bew has been a valuable member of the ADM-HEA team in her previous role of Academic Developer and many of you will have met and worked with her over the past few years.
John Mundy previously worked at the Universities of Manchester, Chester and Central Lancashire, and until recently was the Head of the School of Media, Music and Performance at the University of Salford.
Carolyn and John took up their posts on 1 September and we look forward to working with them over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition to the new HEA structure.

The National Humanities Center is offering 40 residential fellowships

The National Humanities Center, based in North Carolina, is offering a total of 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities (the website gives a more exhaustive list of disciplines). Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials and applications from outside the US are welcomed.

New guidance published by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) offers institutions practical advice on explaining to their students how contact hours are managed.

New resource available on VADS website
The High Wycombe Furniture Archive (HWFA) is part of the Research Centre for Furniture at Buckinghamshire New University in High Wycombe. The archive contains photographic and print material relating to furniture companies in the High Wycombe region, primarily from Ercol Limited and E. Gomme Limited (G-Plan).

The DHS Student Research Travel Grant
The Student Research Travel Grant is awarded by the Design History Society (DHS) biannually to encourage and support research activity amongst students in the field of design history. The Grant is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate scholars (BA, MA or PhD; part-time or full-time) in the field of design history in the UK and RoI. All applicants must be members of the Design History Society.
The deadline for applications occurs twice a year: 15 January and 15 October.

Symposium on Threshold Concepts

Screenworks is a peer-reviewed publication of practice research in screen media and originally took the form of a DVD that was distributed with The Journal of Media Practice. They are now looking to publish exclusively online and they are seeking moving image work on film, video and new media platforms.
