Academics are invited to collaborate with BBC
production staff to consider the future of interactive
media.
BBC Television
Centre, Wood Lane, London, W12 7RJ
Thursday 5 March between 3pm - 6.00
pm
&
BBC Manchester in The Courtyard, Oldham Road, Manchester, M60,
1SJ.
Friday 6 March between 9.30-12.30pm
As part of an AHRC and BBC
co-funded knowledge exchange project the organisers have pleasure in inviting
you to one of two creative workshops for two groups of 20-30 academics and BBC
staff which aim to 'invent and imagine' public service virtual environments.
This is a unique opportunity to meet – and work alongside – senior production
staff at the BBC who are interested in virtual environments, 3D media and
gaming. It is not often such groups meet; this will be one of the first
workshops to place production staff and academics together in a creative
situation.
Over three hours several 'kits of parts' will be produced
through drawing, model-making and discussion. Each of the resulting virtual
environments - it is hoped - might appeal to a wide range of BBC audiences and
fulfil the BBC's public service purposes in new and interesting ways. The day
will also introduce 'Beebac', a new online network for academics and BBC staff
which will foster future collaborative endeavours.
The work produced at
the workshop will be organised, designed, and subsequently presented to
developers in Future Media and Technology in April with the hope that one or two
of the ideas will be taken forward for prototyping.
Please RSVP: L.Jackson3@wmin.ac.uk or phone if you have any questions -
mobile: 0780 872514.

SEDA’s PG Cert in Higher Education Programme Leaders’
and Tutors’ Network
Refreshing PG Certificates in Learning and Teaching in
Higher Education: a pre-conference event
University of Sussex, Brighton
Wednesday 6 May
2009
Midday until 5.00pm (lunch provided)
An event for staff involved
in designing postgraduate certificates in teaching and learning (academic
practice/higher education). This follows the pattern of other pre-conference
workshops at previous SEDA conferences. Participants at past events supported
the idea of continuing with similar sessions.
This event will concentrate
on three case study presentations and will include opportunities for discussion
and the sharing of good practice:
1 Working with professional bodies:
mapping the PG cert
2 Moving from the School of Education to the central
EDU
3 Growing the numbers: encouraging more staff to take up the PG cert
By setting up this event, SEDA hopes to strengthen the already-existing
networks of coordinators and tutors, with a combination of formal and informal
opportunities for sharing experience.
If you will be attending the SEDA
Spring Teaching, Learning and Assessment Conference 2009 at the Thistle Hotel in
Brighton, then you can book overnight accommodation for the night of Wednesday
6th May via the conference registration form available at http://www.seda.ac.uk/

Issue 1 of the Journal of
Screenwriting
Submission deadline: 16th March at the latest
(earlier is appreciated!).
Information about submission:
The
Journal of Screenwriting, a new peer-reviewed journal set up to focus on this
important aspect of moving image pre-production and conceptualisation.
Contributions are sought on the history, theory and practice of
screenwriting and related topics, covering a wide range of practices from film
and television
to animation, new media and computer games.
The
Journal of Screenwriting brings together research and reflection on pedagogy,
professionalism and practice in an area which has until now been rather
overlooked in academic discourse. New work has conventionally been scattered
throughout journals devoted to specific aspects of media theory or practice, and
this is the first UK academic journal to bring together serious
screenwriting-related work under one title. The Journal is international in
scope, and seeks wide-ranging work which is critical, rigorous and original in
its contribution to this developing area of study. We expect to include work
which employs a diverse range of methodological approaches, including
textualanalysis, production analysis, practice as research and historical
investigation.
Articles should be between 4000 and 7000 words in length.
Articles should be sent as soon as possible or by 16th March 2009 to the
Principal Editor Jill Nelmes (j.nelmes@uel.ac.uk), and to the Co-Editor Ian
Macdonald (i.w.macdonald@leeds.ac.uk), to either of whom any
queries about suitability of subject or other requirements should be
sent.
Hard copies can be sent to Ian Macdonald at:
