Welcome back to the busy summer term

Here are just a few of the activities we have planned in the next couple of months:

We are currently in the process of reviewing the Student Essay Competition entries and the ADM Teaching Fellowships. Many thanks to our colleagues who have kindly acted as markers and reviewers, we really appreciate your help. Details about these will be released later this term and we will keep you informed when they are online.

We are also working on Issue 10 of Networks magazine which will be published towards the end of May.

Success Stories from the HEA Subject Centres - Evidence of Impact

This booklet celebrates the contribution of the HEA Subject Centres to addressing the needs of discipline-based teachers and learners. It contains a selection of the success stories from the past ten years. The stories merely illustrate the impact of the wide-ranging work of the 24 Subject Centres and no more than ten have been chosen from any individual Centre.

SECTOR ANNOUNCEMENTS

Enhancing student engagement with feedback - best practice guides and seminar

The Learning and Teaching Institute at Sheffield Hallam University is pleased to announce the publication of a series of best practice guides for the application of technology to deliver actionable feedback. These guides are based on the findings from Technology, Feedback, Action!, a research project funded by the Higher Education Academy (during 2008/9). The project explored the impact of learning technology upon students' engagement with their feedback. These guides are intended to provide information and evidence to support change, and are aimed at students, academic staff, and senior managers. In addition, a seminar to share the methods and outcomes from Technology, Feedback, Action! will take place at Sheffield Hallam University on Friday 14 May 2010, 11am-2pm. During the seminar, entitled 'Enhancing student engagement with feedback', the audience will consider how evidence from the research project can be used to enhance and transform feedback practice in the context of their role. The seminar will offer practical advice to academic tutors, encourage staff to make effective and efficient use of technology-enabled feedback, and promote strategic thinking for senior managers around enhancing student engagement with feedback. The event is free, though places are strictly limited.

Creating Future-Proof Graduates resources

The Creating Future-Proof Graduates project has created resources which help students identify and prepare for situations which, according to employers, epitomise the major problems that newly qualified graduates encounter when they start work in the ‘real world'.

They have been giving away a compendia of their resources (worth £90) to each HEI that attends one of their dissemination events. The final event is on 25 May at Millennium Point in Birmingham City Centre. The workshop will run from 1.30 – 4pm and you will have a chance to experience most of the resources they have created and evaluate them for your own use. The workshop is free.

If your institution has not already received its compendia of resources you can take one away with you. Even if it has, this is your opportunity to talk to the people who not only created the resources but have used them with students; you can have a go for yourself and plan how to introduce them to staff and / or students at your university.

Create Sustain Ability, ADM-HEA Annual Forum 2010

The Art Design Media Subject Centre’s (ADM-HEA) Annual Forum 2010 will focus on the subject of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

To assist and support institutions and art design and media subjects to develop curricula and pedagogy that will help students develop the skills and knowledge to live and work sustainably, this year’s Annual Forum will aim to:

Develop awareness and understanding of Education for Sustainable Development and relationships to art, design and media higher education.
Enable the exchange of information and ideas and practice for embedding sustainability issues and concepts in art, design and media curriculum, learning and teaching
Bring together those who are currently or have in the past undertaken research in the area of ESD to assist in the generation of further ideas and interactions.
Generate opportunities and support for those wishing to collaborate to develop new and existing projects and initiatives.

Arran Stibbe, who is a National Teaching Fellow, author of The Handbook for Sustainable Literacy and Senior Lecturer at the University of Gloucestershire, will open the day with a keynote to be followed by a number of facilitated discussion groups based on submitted papers which will be distributed to delegates before the event and made available from the event web page shortly.

A Space for Assessment: Exploring assessment and feedback in practice and studio based learning environments
Kingston University

An ADM-HEA & PALATINE symposium hosted by Kingston University

The notion of the ‘studio’ as a space for work and learning is integral to both art and design and performing arts education. The Art Design Media Subject Centre (ADM-HEA) and PALATINE, the Subject Centre for Dance, Drama and Music, are organising a symposium to explore assessment and feedback in practice and studio based work. This event will be hosted by Kingston University.

A Space for Assessment symposium will contribute to the current debates around assessment and aims to enhance further our understanding and practice of assessment and feedback through a number of facilitated discussion groups and presentations.

Improving retention and success: retaining students to and through higher education

Higher Education Surveys for Enhancement Conference 2010

Getting there by Degrees: Fast Track (two year Bachelor) Degrees and Flexible Learning Conference

Higher Education is being asked to become “faster” and “more flexible” and to explore alternative forms of provision, such as two-year degrees and a strengthened commitment to short courses, CPD and up-skilling. These agendas featured prominently in Peter Mandelson’s BIS document on “Higher Ambitions”. This conference will explore the implications of these developments and identify the likely opportunities and challenges.

This will be the first national conference with a focus on two-year degrees and one of the first to consider progress in the post-Leitch agenda. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear from some of the leading figures in these areas and to benefit from their experiences and insights. The programme will include keynotes and workshops from senior colleagues at HEFCE and from universities which are among the leaders in fast-track and flexible learning.

Disability Research Conference

This year’s disability research group conference will be held in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, as part of a “Sustainable Disability Network” initiative.

The day will start with two keynote talks, followed by some group work and then a series of short showcases from colleagues at Leeds Met and Sheffield Hallam, outlining their research in the disability area.

As well as giving colleagues the opportunity to showcase their work, the conference will provide an excellent opportunity to become familiar with some of the disability research that is going on at Leeds Met and Sheffield Hallam. Previous conferences have revealed a wide range of research interests, for example disabled students in higher education, young people with disabilities and hospital patients. Colleagues are encouraged to attend the conference and to invite their students to attend it also (it could be useful, for example, re the level 6 project).

‘Meeting the challenge: Improving Black and minority ethnic student success and attainment’

Conference organised by The Higher Education Academy, Equality Challenge Unit in partnership with Coventry University.

Following publication of the recommendations of the Ethnicity Gender and Degree Attainment Project (Jan 2008), the Academy and Equality Challenge Unit has been engaged in the delivery of a joint programme of activities to support the sector in addressing the project findings. This one day conference provides an opportunity for colleagues to engage with the emerging body of research about the BME student experience and achievement and with initiatives that offer pointers for making in-roads into reducing the BME attainment gap. This will include the work of institutions taking part in the Academy/ECU developmental summit programme to improve the degree attainment of BME students.

The event will bring researchers, practitioners, policy makers, managers and students together to share and discuss best practices; generate ideas for new research; and disseminate action orientated institutional research and development initiatives.

Request from 1994 Group to complete survey investigating how universities communicate with potential applicants

Established in 1994, the 1994 Group brings together nineteen internationally renowned, research-intensive universities. The aim of gathering this information is to inform the development of a pilot online resource for domestic and international applicants to all UK universities, which JISC has funded the 1994 Group to develop for use by the whole sector.

The Business of Design

Call for book chapters

This book is about creativity and entrepreneurialism in the context of design. It focuses on design businesses and the knowledge and understanding designers need in order to apply their ideas in business. The authors take an interdisciplinary approach, showing how design business innovation is based on strong competencies in creative design practice, combined with marketing and corporate strategy skills and an understanding of broader contexts such as culture, identity, sustainability and inclusivity.
