Extending Horizons: the Benefits of the European
Dimension on the Student Learning Experience
Cardiff University
18 May 2009
The impact of
the European Dimension on the student learning experience and employability
prospects. Implementing Bologna in your institution; a case study. The
Bologna Process is transforming higher education across Europe. Growing
modernisation and internationalisation presents significant and exciting
opportunities, challenging UK Higher Education Institutions to embrace and
implement the change process.
It is vitally important that we engage in a
positive way and at all levels for the benefit of our institutions, our students
and staff.
The Higher Education Academy and the British Council are
holding a seminar on Bologna to inform academics of recent developments in the
Bologna Process and to engage them in thinking about the implications of Bologna
for learning and teaching at subject level.
The event has a particular
focus on curriculum development in relation to mobility, study and work
placements, and the recognition issues related to mobility and the impact on
employability.
Questions on internationalisation and what further steps
to take, and on assessing the positive consequences of engagement with the
European Higher Education Area will be addressed by the keynote speaker
Professor Sir Drummond Bone.
Keynote speakers, the UK Bologna Experts,
staff from the HE Academy Subject Centres, as well as a significant number of
students will contribute to this unique and innovative event.

Enhancing undergraduate degrees involving the study
of multiple subjects
Newcastle University
Tuesday 11th August 2009
11am-4pm
Event hosted by the Combined Studies Centre at Newcastle
University.
Combined and Joint Honours degree programmes attract students
who wish to study two or more distinct subjects. These students desire a
reasonable level of choice in choosing modules and therefore flexibility is the
key component of such programmes. However, the extent of flexibility and the
study of multiple subjects creates tensions with a number of significant
issues.
Proposals are invited to offer a workshop session about ways of
alleviating these tensions and therefore enhancing the quality of the student
experience and outcomes or achieving some sense of interdisciplinarity in joint
and combined degrees. Such good practice could take a variety of forms –
innovative approaches to curriculum, programme structures, infrastructural
support, administration or social and academic integration etc.
