Early Career Academics: Development, Socialisation and Agency

Contributions are invited for a special issue of the International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD) on the topic Early Career Academics: Development, Socialisation and Agency to be co-edited by Dr Kathryn A. Sutherland and Dr K. Lynn Taylor.

Early career academics are a significant, but ill-defined and under-researched population within higher education. In this special issue of IJAD, the editors wish to provide a forum for new thinking about the development of academic staff/faculty in the early stages of their careers. Contributions may focus on any aspect of the early career academic experience but they are particularly looking for papers that investigate the socialisation, agency, support and development of early career academics as teachers, researchers, scholars, academic citizens and/or professionals.

For the purposes of this special issue of IJAD they are focussing on academic staff/faculty within the first five years or so of their first academic appointment. Their focus will not be on doctoral students. However, manuscripts that interrogate the experience of being an early career academic who is also completing postgraduate studies are invited.

Papers should be original and previously unpublished. They may be historical, philosophical or empirical in mode, including reflectively theorised case studies that provide insights about the early career academic experience. Contributions must be of international relevance. Authors can achieve this in several ways: ideas and practice can be introduced from more than one country; a contribution may be based in practice in one country or institution, and accompanied by commentaries from colleagues in other countries; or, a contribution may be contextualised with reference to issues of concern to educational developers worldwide. Other approaches to addressing the interests of an international audience will also be welcomed.

For IJAD’s Aims and Scope, see: http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=1360-144X&linktype=1   All papers will undergo double-blind peer review and should be submitted via the journal’s website: http://www.itl.usyd.edu.au/ijad/

An extended abstract (up to 1500 words) or full paper should be submitted as an expression of interest by 15 October 2010.

Full papers will be expected by 10 December 2010 for peer review in an issue to appear in 2011. The full papers should be no longer than 6000 words including the abstract and citations and must follow the style of the IJAD journal. For manuscript guidelines, see: http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=1360-144X&linktype=44
