CETLs
The Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning were funded by HEFCE and ran from 2005-06 to 2009-10. The following CETLs were either wholly or partly related to Art Design and Media.
In 2009, ADM-HEA and GLAD organised an event and produced a publication consisting of research papers produced by these and other CETLs. More..

InQbate, The Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Creativity
Universities of Brighton and Sussex
Creativity is perhaps the most prized human attribute and an essential element of the design process, so it is unsurprising that for centuries we have attempted to enhance and mimic these powers with technology. The InQbate CETL included within its remit utilising technology more effectively in the creative process, whether in the creative arts, design or every-day activities. Currently technology is most effective as a partner only when our ideas are already formed. Creative processes typically begin with less developed material and fuzzy notions of structure. The InQbate CETL enabled the further application of technology to creative problem-solving tasks.

The Centre for Employability through the Humanities (CETH)
University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN)
ceth sought to develop Humanities graduates who are enterprising, entrepreneurial and employable. During the first two years of operation the cetl concentrated upon English, History and Film & Media, and afterwards starting to work more closely with colleagues in Design, Art and Fashion. Students study modules based in Realistic Work Environments including a publishing house, exhibition/ theatre space and a media production area, so gaining practical experience within the curriculum. An incubator unit was created to support recent Humanities graduates starting out in business.
A new building ‘The Media Factory’ opened in September 2007 housing a suite of new learning spaces including Realistic Working Environments, fully equipped and flexible teaching rooms and specialist spaces such as an archive and collections room to facilitate the exploration of new teaching practices and Active Learning approaches.

Centre for Excellence in Product and Automative Design (CEPAD)
University of Coventry
The
Centre capitalised on its international profile in automotive
design. Through the use of computer technonolgies it enabled design
students to develop spatial intelligence within a culturally diverse
and international context. Students created digital portfolios
which were their passports to the community of practice of transport
and product design. The Centre supported this through the creation
of digital studios and networks. An international partnership provided professional engagement in project work and portfolio
development. This was underpinned by pedagogic research into
spatial awareness, 'communities of practice' theory and design
intelligence. There was a further remit to examine curriculum
internationalisation and collaborative design activity as seen from
different cultural viewpoints.

Centre for Professional Learning from the Workplace (PLW)
University of Westminster
PLW
encompassed learning for work, learning at work and learning through
work. It prepared students for professional life using the knowledge,
skills and attributes typically acquired in the workplace. It was also a
key part of CPD for established professionals. PLW was thus important in
lifelong learning, in maintaining professional standards and in
individual and organisational development. Effective support of all
participants, including workplace and university tutors, is central to
student success in PLW. The Centre recognized that graduates in the
creative industries commonly develop portfolio careers that include
projects, contract work and self-employment. Student preparation
includes work placements in conjunction with modules facilitating
identification of professional skills and understanding of issues such
as organisational structures, cultures and power relationships.

Higher Education Learning Partnerships Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (HELP-CETL)
University of Plymouth
The HELP CETL, based at the University of Plymouth, aimed to become the national exemplar of excellence in locally-based Higher Education in Further Education [HE in FE]. CETL funding enabled HELP to build on the excellent track record of the University of Plymouth [along with its regional Further Education College partners] in developing successful HE in FE partnerships and significantly widening participation while simultaneously maintaining high retention levels.
It further strengthened partnerships, enhanced the students' experience, supported a major expansion of provision and spread excellence both across its network and more widely through collaboration with other HE in FE consortia.
