Patchwork Text: 10 Years On Seminar
- Location:
- City University, London, Northampton Square, London EC1V 0HB
- Date(s):
- 4 June 2010 10:00-15:30
This one day seminar organised by the Centre for Recording Achievement in association with City University, London seeks to:- re-evaluate the Patchwork Text ideas and messages by bringing together practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and institutions who make reference to the Patchwork Text as a source for their current curriculum and assessment design. In particular it will explore how e-portfolio and other learning technologies support and enhance such curriculum and assessment practices.
The Patchwork Text (‘a radical re-assessment of coursework assignments’) was a three-year research project integrating teaching, assessment and collaborative learning. It involved a range of disciplines and three institutions: Anglia Polytechnic University (now Anglia Ruskin University), Nottingham Trent University and Cambridge University. The Project’s work was published in a special edition of the SEDA journal Innovations in Education and Teaching International Volume 40 Number 2 in 2003.
The key ideas of the project – an assignment built up gradually through a series of contrasted writing tasks over a period of weeks and shared with other students in small group discussions, ‘stitched together’ by a synoptic, reflective commentary – were powerful enough to live on after the end of the project. They seem to have found a particular resonance within the e-portfolio community of practitioners, as this form of technology lends itself to collaborative and reflective learning using diverse evidence.
