Managing a Diversity of Learners

This short course aims to:

• Enable you to identify and make appropriate provision for diversity in the context of HE;
• Extend your awareness of a range of approaches to learning;
• Increase your awareness of and ability to respond sensitively and appropriately to issues relating to inclusivity and accessibility;
• Encourage you to value diversity as a potential enrichment of the learning experience and to minimise barriers to learning.
  

Objectives

By the end of this course you will be able to:

1. recognise and meet the diverse needs of HE learners;
2. demonstrate knowledge of, and use policies, procedures and legislation to ensure inclusivity and accessibility;
3. analyse a range of approaches to supporting learning;
4. design and apply learning activities appropriate to the needs of individual learners;
5. create a safe and productive learning environment for all learners;
6. identify and minimise potential barriers to learning;
7. acknowledge diversity and employ it as a means to enhance learning.
   

Indicative Content

Policies, procedures and legislation: Human Rights; Disability Discrimination Act(s); international students; codes of practice; issues relating to ethics and morality; widening access; equality of opportunity; gender; sexuality; culture; religion; social and economic background; age; experience; ability.
 
Approaches to learning: models of ability and potentiality; attitudes and expectations; motivation; self-esteem; levels of understanding and learning style; physical and environmental issues; group processes and group dynamics.
